OUTLINE
The program includes the following elements:
- What is electricity and what are its uses.
- Current sources of electricity in the province and around the world.
- Environmental impact and renewable/non-renewable status of different sources of electricity including, oil, natural gas, nuclear, coal, hydro, solar, wind, and tidal
- Transformation of energy from these sources into usable electricity – the role of transmission and batteries.
- Skills that required in capturing and using renewable energy.
- The potential roles for girls in this sector.
- Measurement of carbon footprints and methods to conserve, alter and choose types and usage of electricity to reduce and offset impacts on the environment.
- Careers in renewable energy.
Hands-on Learning
All topics include practical exercises and laboratory work demonstrating how energy is transformed from one form to another, along with basic electrical theory and hands on project examples. Wherever possible female role models will be invited to participate in the camps and speak to the girls.
On the last day of the camp the educator, with assistance from the students, will setup a working hybrid energy system that can energize everyday appliances such as small power tools. The camp will use the hybrid system to power an application at the school to show participants the energy saved from the grid by using their hybrid.
Connection to Emission Reduction & Conservation
The camp emphasises the importance of reducing emissions and saving energy. While the applications may vary, examples are:
- Run lighting in the lab for camp off its own solar panel. At the conclusion of the camp the girls will analyse how much alternative energy had been generated during week;
- Leave the lab with a solar panel system (for a month or so) that runs a light to demonstrate energy savings and corresponding emissions reductions;
- Create a panel display that tallies the savings/energy per day from a solar panel
Site Visits
There will be site visits to neighbouring renewable energy projects, e.g., solar, wind or small-scale hydro.
LOCATIONS
The GREAT camps will be held throughout Newfoundland and Labrador, in both rural and urban areas.
